Finding their inspiration in European, American, and Latin traditions, the band plays vintage American swing, French chanson, and a bit of everything in between. Performing originals, choice jazz standards, and the occasional rock anthem, the group also sings in both French and English. KL: Bounded Freedom: Explorations in Possibility and Limits
This work emerges from a long and ongoing, never-ending period of work and meditation on the ways confined space, from the womb to the prison cell and points in between, shape subjectivity, and on the possibilities for freedom that exist within conditions of extreme constraint. The work juxtaposes 1) the choreographic patterning of our “natural” conditioning, which takes root in the time spent in the confines of the womb with 2) the ways in which we relate to, are conditioned by, resist, submit to, and re-imagine “authority,” for instance as embodied in the legal institutions whose ultimate sign of power is, arguably, the prison cell.
KRISTEN LEWIS, JD, LLM is a dance/performance artist, first and foremost, but also a movement educator, and legal advocate. In all of these overlapping and intersecting roles, she is interested in how embodied approaches to storytelling can open up information-saturated Human Persons to more nuanced, beautiful, peace-generating alternatives to the divisive narratives that govern our status quo. She is the artistic director of Gull Cry Dance, and the executive director of the Canadian Centre for Men and Families (Vancouver). Her current cycle of work unfolds between and through the never-ending dance of tension between opposites that forms the warp and weft of this reality we live in and that lives in us:

Karel Roessingh performs For Love Birds – Birdsongs and Valentines. Karel will be playing original music from his birdsong in the parkade recordings as well as romantic standards for Valentine’s Day. The birdsong album, recorded in the lowest level of the View Street Parkade, beside Hermann’s Jazz Club late on an August night in 2017 on a Steinway grand is based on bird songs collected on a cross-Canada camping trip with Karel’s wife, Brenda in 2016.

SEEDS FOR THE GARDEN OF YOUR LIFE with Indrus Piche
It’s now mid-January, and we can feel and sense the returning light around us. Spring is still a few months away, but now is the time to begin thinking about seeds — not for the soil, but for your life. Allow me to invite you to a day for reflection and discernment through writing as a way to clarify what seeds care calling to be planted in the garden of your life. I will be offering questions as prompts that will support you to listen deeply for what seeds you may plan to plant for spring. There will be writing prompts for three aspects: how to listen, the response, and the quest. There will be space for sharing, as well as spending the day with yourself.
Because of the writing aspect, some of the day will be in silence of reflection. Imagine a day without distraction, without devices, but with pen and paper and time to be with you. RSVP and/or email me indrus@indrus.com with any questions. Thank you for your trust, Indrus.
Indrus Piche is a depth psychologist in private practice in Victoria.
