POETRY AND SONG CIRCLE, 2 sessions IN OCTOBER: Oct 22, 2025 online & Oct 29, 2025 in person at the church
NOTE: We are currently trying the experiment of alternating live sessions and Zoom sessions in the monthly Poetry and Song program, as our attempt at a hybrid session last time did not work well. So, the session outlined below is wholly Zoom, while November’s session will be live.
Please note, however, that Rob O’Neill and Michelle Rey Teng are offering live sessions of poetry and song in the months where the regular program involves Zoom sessions. Please visit the Church at 7p.m. on October 29 (doors at 6:45pm) for their first live session or contact them for further information at cotoffice2017@gmail.com
If you want to attend the online session, here is the information:
Wednesday, October 22nd , 2025: “Gracias a la Vida” (“Thanks to Life”): Poetry and Song Circle, 7 p.m
October is the month when Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving. In England, thanksgiving was known as the Harvest Festival, and the churches would be decorated with sheaves of wheat, apples, branches with berries, and other fruits of the Fall season. As we pointed out last month, there is an inner harvest as well as an outer one, as we reckon the outcome of our own projects and life journey at this time of year.
We might say that the next stage of this reckoning is gratitude for the gifts that have come to us. This gratitude does not necessarily assume that everything that is happening in our worlds, smaller and larger, is positive, or that all our feelings are positive. One of my touchstones in the area of praise songs and poems is the Chilean singer Violetta Parra’s “Gracias a la Vida” (“Thanks to Life”). The last verse of this very moving song is
Thank you to life, that has given me so much
It has given me laughter and it has given me crying
So I can distinguish blessings from brokenness
The two ingredients that make up my songs
And your songs, that are the same songs
As everyone’s songs.
Though there is crying as well as laughter in (nearly) all of us, we can still have gratitude for life’s many blessings, and express this gratitude in poems and songs of praise and appreciation. If this exploration of thanksgiving appeals to you, you are invited to bring a poem or song on this topic. But as always, you are welcome to bring a poem or song on another topic, or just to come and listen.

approach to movement, including perceptual practices of awareness in class and everyday life, …for sensuous
support as we, linger in the darkness of not knowing … crossing thresholds of transformation in the body,
movement and life.
Here, we will embrace a species-inclusive awareness, including and incorporating movement gestures from earlier
times, nature’s infinite and exquisite gestures, remembering and reclaiming our timeless instinctual nature, …to
meet these dark days of winter …and the darkness of these times.
An opportunity for weekly connection, diving together in the deep-end of life, welcomed by frequencies of a future
